scan the dark water for tadpoles or other treasures. Just beneath the surface,
something odd -- iridescent (a word he learned in sixth grade) and
globular (another spelling quiz term) -- floated against the current,
headed toward him. |
| Ignoring his mother's warnings about
pollutants, Evan hooked his right ankle behind the rock and stretched just
a bit further. He felt the edges of the thing, like jello, squishing but
not disintegrating completely under the pressure of his fingers.
Evan felt the lightest throbbing, not as strong as his own heartbeat, which
pounded now, but definitely the beat of something alive. |
| As if beckoned, the creature drifted
into Evan's palm. His hands tingled briefly as he cautiously lifted the
