Far more cheerful than we might expect from an outpost of the federal bureaucracy, the West Brunnersville Post Office signifies something other than efficiency. Postmistress Nannie Ann Gardner stands behind her counter exchanging tightwad tips with another member of the Consumer Advocacy League.
Mr. Bradford J. Hughes III, Vice President of the Hughes Food Additive Company Incorporated, waits with justified impatience. All he needs is a single first class stamp to order something in a plain brown wrapper, something that he would rather not process through his secretary.
The east wall of the post office features the largest bulletin board that most of us have ever seen. Fliers for local retail stores, announcements of charity events, a staggering volume of political manifestos, some handmade signs about lost kittens, thumbtacked business cards, and photos from Nannie's ten day vacation in Jamaica compete for our attention. Nonetheless, we look at the west wall.
Row after row of post office boxes display tiny metal doors with old-fashioned brass knobs and gold stick-on numbers. Each box contains either a fool or a hero. Each contains a story.
