Aunt Gertrude endlessly repeated two favorite pieces of advice. One, live life to the fullest. Two, eliminate the middleman. Although Auntie's zest long ago dwindled from a few too many infections at the Sunny Sides Skilled Nursing Facility, her words reverberated.
Madeline Suggs hit age forty with a pleasant face, plump thighs, and an empty engagement calendar. An otherwise practical woman, despite Aunt Gertrude's influence since an early age, Madeline threw caution to the wind and launched a plot to snare a man.
Kind hearted co-workers at the HyperDial Telemarketing Company suggested a personal ad in those classified listings that keep many freebie newspapers afloat. That tawdry clerk, Antoinette of the purple pantsuit, three cubicles down, said, "Honey, I met my auto dealer through an ad. Just look at all the jewelry he's given me." She shook nine sparkling bangles on her bony forearm.
Then the nondescript gal in the corner called out, "My cousin found three husbands through personal ads," which triggered a room full of chatter until the shift finally ended.
Madeline actually called the Brunnersville County Singles Gazette. But the very thought of twenty cents per word! Not to mention complicated coding for marital status and ethnicity. Certainly not the best approach for our heroine.
The plan came to a standstill, until late one April night, when the pink hair curlers pinched the scalp too tightly to allow a wink of sleep. Madeline had a vision.
The slightly puckered, Noxema-coated face of Aunt Gertrude hovered in the air. A vague image, shrouded in fog, just like the special effects on those television shows about psychic phenomenon. This not-yet-really-dead ghost smelled like an old mattress, something never mentioned in the tabloids.
"Eliminate the middle man. Middle man. Middle man," the apparition murmured.
